Australian King Parrot
The Australian King Parrot (Alisterus scapularis) is endemic to eastern Australia.
King Parrots are usually found in rainforests or wet sclerophyll forests of the east coast and ranges of Australia, including eucalyptus wooded areas in and directly adjacent to subtropical and temperate rainforest. They do however also venture into urban areas and have been seen around human settlements.
Their range is from Cooktown in QLD down to Port Campbell in Victoria.
The King Parrot is a startlingly beautiful bird with distinctive color differences between male and female.
The adult males (4 years +) have a completely red head, breast, and lower undersides, with a blue lower back, green wings and a long green tail whilst the females have a green head and breast, black upper beak, and paler yellow eye ring. You will usually see King Parrots in pairs or in the case of unpaired young males, in small groups. King Parrots can reach 42cm in length including the tail.
